President Obama clarified the White House position while addressing a crowd gathered around the White House on Friday evening to observe Ramadan, an Islamic ritual month: "As a citizen, and as president, I believe that Muslims have the same right to practice their religion as everyone else in this country, [...] That includes the right to build a place of worship and a community center on private property in lower Manhattan, in accordance with local laws and ordinances, [...] This is America, and our commitment to religious freedom must be unshakable."
Previously, the White House had not taken a stance on the mosque as Press Secretary Robert Gibbs had insisted it was a local matter.
Not only has the initial plan to build the Mosque been controversial due to its proximity to the previous World Trade Centres, but also the $100 million funding of the mosque has also been a contested point. Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf insists that the funding comes from the American Islamic community, however, later he told an Arabic-language newspaper in Britain that funding would also come from Arab countries.
