• Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard Comes out as an Atheist

Attachment 361A few days ago during an interview with ABC Melborne's Jon Faine, Australia's first female Prime Minister Julia Gillard came out as an atheist. When asked if she believed in God, Gillard replied: "No, I don't Jon, I'm not a religious person." She then went on to explain that that although she had been raised as a Baptist, during her adult life she "[...] found a different path,". Listen to the full interview here.

According to The Australian, not only is Gillard the first female Prime Minister of Australia, she is also the first who has never been married. In addition, she is also the first Prime Minister since Billy Hughes (1915-1923) to be a Prime Minister born overseas. On the other hand, she was beat by Prime Minister Bob Hawke (1983-1991) for being the first non-believer, as Hawke was a self proclaimed agnostic by the time he had entered politics and ultimately became Australia's longest serving Prime Minister.

Since it was an Australian who first made me question the doctrines of the church I had grown up in and started me on the path toward free-thinking, I'm always very interested in what's happening down under. Great news for Australia!
